Attend a Training Session.

The P.E.E.R. Center, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health, is proud to offer new training classes.

Registration is Required.

In the field of peer support, the most challenging moments occur when we encounter a "no." Whether it is a refusal of services, a disagreement on a goal, or a pushback against a suggestion, these moments of resistance often lead to frustration and burnout for the supporter.

This comprehensive training series provides a deep dive into the evidence-based practices of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Participants will move beyond basic empathy to learn the high-level tactical skills required to navigate resistance and handle objections without damaging the relationship.

By shifting from a "directive" approach to a "collaborative" one, you will learn to hear the person behind the objection and guide them toward their own internal motivation for change.

Key Learning Pillars:

  • MI Fundamentals: Mastering the PACE mindset and OARS communication tools.

  • Rolling with Resistance: Understanding why resistance happens and learning to "de-escalate" the tug-of-war.

  • Handling Objections: Practical strategies to address "the no" while maintaining a peer-centered partnership.

  • Applied Practice: Real-world scenarios focused on the specific objections encountered in peer-to-peer work.
